Slot Recovery Solutions

Provides Single-Source, Casing Cut & Pull and Side Track from Shallow Depth, Extending Well Life

Objectives

  • Safely recover 500 ft of 9-5/8 in. and 13-3/8 in. casing inside 18-5/8 in. casing.
  • Set 18-5/8 in. QuickCut™ whipstock to sidetrack the well from shallow depth.

Our Approach

  • After well objectives and operator needs were determined through engagement with the customer, the Weatherford engineering team recommended bottomhole assemblies (BHA) and tubulars that were specifically designed for the scope of work to ensure maximum efficiencies and pulling capacities to mitigate insufficient rig-pulling capability.
  • The Weatherford Downhole Power Tool (DHPT) was configured to operate at surface while delivering high-efficiency throughout the operation.
  • To reduce risks associated with conventional fishing equipment and provide greater capacity, Weatherford deployed the Flow Release Mechanical (FRM) spear to recover the casing.
  • While well conditions were unfavorable, the adaptability of the operation allowed for multiple cuts to be performed to recover the casing at target depth.
  • With the proven performance of the DHPT in harsh casing-pulling events and ability to overcome cement bonds, the rig was able to safely pull at the shallow depth. After 23 runs of the DHPT with 221 cycles, 17 individual sections were successfully recovered.
  • Once the individual sections were recovered, the 18-5/8 in. QuickCut whipstock was run, set, and a 17-1/2 in. window milled to create a 10-ft rathole.

Value to Customer

  • The Weatherford slot recovery solution provided the customer with a complete, all-in-one resolution starting from pre-job planning and engineering to supplying all the necessary equipment to complete the operation.
  • With the ability to pull up to the permitted 950K lbs. rig-floor capacity, far exceeding the rigs allowed pulling capacity of 80K lbs., the DHPT withstood harsh casing-pulling conditions and reduced the risk associated with pulling tubulars and casing from shallow depths in conventional fishing operations.
  • The ability to provide a slot recovery with the adopted technology mitigated the need for more expensive and time-consuming remedial activities.
  • The introduction of the FRM spear to the region replaced traditional engagement technology to enable higher pulling forces to be applied while mitigating the risk associated with traditional grapples and the historical disengagement issues both downhole and at surface.
